The San Francisco chapter of the Institute for International Film Financing (IIFF) continues its popular monthly gatherings at the junction of film & finance with a special Film Financing Townhall at the renowned Academy of Art. Their facilities are conveniently located just a short stroll from SF Caltrain Station at 4th & King.

This grassroots community get-together is designed to foster & inform productive relationships between attendees. It provides unbiased insight & education about the business of film and film financing in particular. The event features a powerful roster of highly topical speakers from the filmmaking and financial industries. We are delighted to welcome real-world financiers among our guests!

The evening's five six presentations plus panel discussion address key issues relevant to filmmakers, financiers and anyone interested in the economics, business mechanics, and financial dynamics of motion pictures. They are followed by Q&A time. Attendees also have ample opportunity to interact & network with our featured experts and amongst themselves.

An informal après-meeting celebration will take place at a nearby restaurant.

Host logoThis month's Film Financing Townhall in San Francisco is hosted by the esteemed Academy of Art, a leading private university founded in 1929 in San Francisco. With nearly 10,000 students that occupy its 30+ buildings in downtown San Francisco, AAU is considered the largest private school of art and design in the United States. It offers both traditional on-campus and online distance-education degree and certificate programs in a wide variety of fine arts-related majors, including Motion Pictures & Television and Animation & Visual Effects. Danae Ringelmann

Speaker headshot 1Danae Ringelmann co-founded the crowdfunding platform IndieGoGo.com to democratize fundraising. She serves as IndieGoGo's COO and brings finance and entertainment industry expertise to the company. Danae has spoken at the Producers Guild of America (PGA), International Documentary Association (IDA), Digital Hollywood, Los Angeles Film Festival, Association of Film Commissioners International (AFCI), Women in Film & TV, TieCon, UGCX and UC Berkeley. Fast Company Magazine recently named her one of the Top 50 Women Innovators in Technology. Prior to IndieGoGo, Danae was a Securities Analyst at Cowen & Co., where she covered entertainment companies including Pixar, Lionsgate, Disney and Electronic Arts. While at JPMorgan's Investment Bank and Private Bank, she also focused on cable network, NFL, newspaper and hedge-fund clientele. In the wake of 9/11, Danae co-produced a concert reading of "Incident at Vichy," an Arthur Miller play addressing the politically charged topic of racial profiling. She is a CFA Charterholder and has an MBA degree from the Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley. Kevin Epps

Speaker headshot 4Kevin Epps is a community activist, award-winning filmmaker and producer of digital and new media projects. His 2002 documentary "Straight Outta Hunters Point" won local and national acclaim. It established him as a leader in digital, independent film and new media. His other most recent work, ranging from gun violence to black fatherhood, can be seen airing nationwide on Current TV, a network founded by former Vice President Al Gore. Epps is a member of the Digital Media Advisory Council (DMAC), tirelessly advocating for underserved communities. He is also a board member of the San Francisco Black Film Festival and Conscious Youth Media Crew. Epps has partnered with governmental and corporate entities such as the National Park Service, University of San Francisco, Yahoo, Google, Discovery Channel, Boys & Girls Club, City of Richmond, Current TV and other well known organizations. Pernella Sommerville

Speaker headshot 5As Public Relations and Events Manager at Academy of Art University, Pernella Sommerville is in charge of PR and event planning. She works with the Executive Vice President of Public Relations in directing corporate events, commencement, portfolio reviews, student shows, orientation, marketing communications efforts and more. She is also responsible for the University's interaction with the press and media, which includes, but is not limited to, press releases to develop key media relationships. Previously, Pernella was a Lecturer at the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising. Jesse Block

Speaker headshot 6Jesse Block is a creator of unique video programs and has directed a wide variety of programs for broadcast, corporate, commercial, educational and online outlets. He has been the Director of Television Programming for the iconic Monterey Jazz Festival since 2002, which has included some unforgettable performances by Sonny Rollins, Diana Krall, Herbie Hancock and others. He also directed the late-night program "Live From the Starlight Room" (ABC), featuring early performances by Train and the Donnas, "Jazz Central" (BET) and "The Anti-Gravity Room" (SyFy). Jesse has produced and directed quite a few music documentaries, including "Electric Guitar," the story of John Cipollina, the dynamic lead guitarist of San Francisco's Quicksilver Messenger Service, and "Brotherly Jazz," the jazz documentary on the Heath Brothers, which has received rave reviews and played in 12 film festivals. He produced two documentaries on the rock band Hot Tuna: "Live at the Fillmore" and "25 Years and Runnin' - Live at Sweetwater" (PBS). Other programs Jesse has produced and directed include concert videos of David Bromberg and His Big Band at the Count Basie Theater in Red Bank, NJ, Todd Rungren live at the Martime Hall San Francsico and Merl Saunders' "Blues From the Rainforest." Sheridan Tatsuno

Speaker headshot 10Sheridan Tatsuno is a seasoned businessman with over 30 years of experience in the high-tech and urban planning industries. He began his film career by advising a student on a video class assignment, which won the 1980 PBS Documentary of the Year Award, namely "Survivors" about California survivors of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings. During Japan's heyday in the 1980s, he wrote two business books on Japan, "The Technopolis Strategy" and "Created in Japan," which were optioned, respectively, by Central Independent Television plc of London for "Japan Dreaming" (1991) and by Alvin Perlmutter Inc. of New York for the four-hour PBS series "The Creative Spirit" (1992). Since 1991, Mr. Tatsuno has written 12 screenplays and is currently writing two screenplays slated for independent production, as well as brainstorming two new scripts. He is a member of FilmAngels and the Institute for International Film Financing. In the high-tech industry, Mr. Tatsuno has advised over 700 companies in the US, Japan, Asia and Europe, while working as a senior analyst at leading market researcher Dataquest/Gartner Group (1982-1989) and his own consulting firm, Dreamscape Global (1989-present). A visionary thinker, Silicon Valley business strategist and thought leader, Mr. Tatsuno was involved with the early stages of the "Intel Inside" marketing campaign, Nokia's global strategy planning, AMD's breakthrough sub-$1000 PC, and Canon's networked equipment strategy. His strength is helping companies develop breakthrough strategies. Currently, he is advising a videoconferencing startup and is conducting surveys on medical imaging, solar panels, fuel cells, batteries for electric cars and smart grids.
